If your car’s registration has expired in Massachusetts, you can still donate it in Greater Boston through Revive Rides. The current registration stickers are not what decide whether we can accept your vehicle. What matters is that you have a valid Massachusetts title in your name, signed correctly over to us. You do not need to renew the registration, pay back fees, or make the car roadworthy before donating. We send a free tow truck, handle the transfer, and you still receive a tax receipt for your donation.
Here’s how it works locally: whether you’re in Dorchester, Somerville, Quincy, Brookline, Chelsea, or out along the North Shore, we schedule a pickup right where the vehicle sits—driveway, street spot, or garage. Because we tow it, the car does not need current plates or inspection. Once you sign the title over, responsibility for the vehicle shifts to the charity. You should then notify the Massachusetts RMV of the transfer to avoid future excise tax or liability. Revive Rides processes your donation to benefit Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) supporting people who are blind or visually impaired, and we mail you the tax documentation you need.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Check that you have the title in your name
Even with completely expired registration, you can donate as long as you have a valid Massachusetts title in your name. Find your title and make sure the name matches your driver’s license. If there’s a loan listed, confirm it’s released. No need to visit the RMV to renew the registration first—just have the title ready for the tow driver.
Tell us where the car is sitting in Greater Boston
Whether your car is parked on a side street in Jamaica Plain, in a South Boston garage, or in a driveway in Medford, give us the exact location and any access details. Since we tow at no cost to you, the car doesn’t need to be driven or have current plates. We’ll work around resident parking, tight streets, and typical Boston parking challenges.
Schedule your free tow pickup around your schedule
Pick a day and general time that works for you. Our towing partners operate throughout Greater Boston, from Cambridge and Allston-Brighton to Revere and Newton. The tow truck comes with the paperwork, loads your vehicle, and you don’t pay a penny—even with lapsed registration, expired stickers, or no inspection. You can remove plates beforehand or when the driver arrives.
Sign the title and hand over the vehicle
At pickup, you’ll sign the Massachusetts title to Revive Rides as instructed. Once it’s signed and the driver takes possession, the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility. You do not have to renew registration, fix inspection issues, or settle excise tax before the donation. We take the car as-is, including any registration or mechanical problems.
Notify the RMV and claim your tax deduction
After pickup, file a Notice of Sale/Transfer with the Massachusetts RMV and contact your insurance company to cancel coverage. This helps protect you from future tickets or excise bills. Revive Rides then processes the donation for Heritage for the Blind and mails you a tax receipt. For donations over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your tax return.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: An expired registration is fine; a missing or incorrect title is not. If the title is lost or still in a previous owner’s name, you’ll likely need to request a duplicate or have the prior owner sign it over first. Resolve the title issue with the Massachusetts RMV before scheduling pickup to avoid delays.
Active liens or unpaid car loans
Tip: Registration status doesn’t matter, but a lien might. If the title shows a finance company and there’s no lien release stamp or letter, we may not be able to complete the transfer. Contact the lender to confirm the loan is paid and obtain a lien release so the donation title can be properly signed over.
Unmoved cars in tight Boston parking or garages
Tip: We can tow non-running and unregistered vehicles, but access matters. Let us know if the car is in a tight Back Bay garage, down a steep driveway, or blocked in by other vehicles. Clear a path as best you can and share photos if needed. This helps us send the right truck and avoid rescheduling.
Forgetting to notify the RMV and cancel insurance
Tip: Once the car is towed, you’re usually no longer responsible—but the RMV and your insurer won’t know that unless you tell them. File the transfer notice with the Massachusetts RMV and cancel your policy. This helps you avoid future excise tax bills, parking ticket notices, or insurance charges tied to the old plate.
